Baby's Nursery

I’d by lying if I didn’t say one of the most exciting things about preparing for this baby is putting together the nursery. I love decorating and who doesn’t love decorating for a cute little baby?

Theme.

Most nurseries have some type of theme. I decided to go with a sheep/lamb theme. Originally inspired by baby farm animal watercolor prints, I had planned to do a theme of all farm animals (sheep, cows, pigs, chickens, horses, etc.). But after falling in love with the sheep/lamb bedding I found, I decided to go all-in with the sheep/lamb theme. Nothing says good night like counting sheep, right?! I still tried to find ways to incorporate the other farm animals here and there.

Color Scheme.

The color scheme I ended up arriving at was very neutral. Not only do I like the fresh feel of neutral colors, it worked well since we don’t know the sex of the baby. We painted the nursery early on with a light shade of greige to lighten the room up. You’ll see that natural wood, cream, tan and black are the other main colors found throughout in the nursery.

The Process.

FURNITURE. I knew what crib I wanted early on so that established the color palette and feel of the room. Because the crib had a bit of a retro vibe, I knew an old dresser in my parents’ garage would complement it very well. It needed some fixing up, however. See this post about the work Ryan did to restore the dresser. The end table was an easy pick … an inexpensive find that matched the crib well. Lastly, I wrapped up the furniture finds with the rocker. I liked the natural wood and the neutral gray color of the rocker. It was, unfortunately, back-ordered when I discovered it online but was able to pre-order from a site, knowing it would arrive before the baby’s due date.

BAA-BAA-BABY. The bedding was the first thing I purchased, primarily because Pottery Barn Kids was discontinuing it. As I mentioned, once I landed on this bedding, I was focused on the sheep/lamb theme and kept my eyes peeled for anything lamb/sheep related. Mom got things started by gifting us a stuffed lamb. The mobile, lamb rocker, blanket and artwork were ordered shortly thereafter. Mom also found the super cute fluffy figurines you see on the shelf. Hopefully it doesn’t look overkill because I just couldn’t resist! All things sheep, please.

DETAILS. After getting the furniture and hunting for sheep, I focused my efforts on the fine details of the room. We got ledge shelves for books and made the shelves above the dresser. I decorated the shelves with artwork, including this special piece, artificial plants in fun planters and other random finds. I kept the bedding color palette in mind when selecting pillows and storage. I think we will try to add a few gender-specific items once baby arrives, including a letter for the first initial of their name.

Welcoming baby home.

We can’t wait to bring our baby home to the special room we created for him/her. While I got the fun job of picking out and buying everything, Ryan got the job of fixing up, assembling, hanging and making items – thanks, dear! I think we put both of our skills and talents to work for us.
