Dresser for Baby
The baby nursery is ready thanks to the hard work put in by Daddy Ryan! Ryan not only assembled the crib and hung everything you see on the walls, he also took on a big project of revamping an old family dresser into a changing table/dresser. The dresser was given to my parents from my grandma Ruba when my youngest sister Paige was born. My mom thinks Grandma found it at a garage sale. The dresser hasn’t been used in years and has been sitting in my parents’ garage. It was looking pretty dang rough. However, I thought the mid-century look of the dresser was nice, and it seemed to have good bones, so I persuaded Ryan to try and fix it up.
Ryan’s work on the dresser included sanding away the existing finish, painting the outside and the handles and building some sectioning elements inside the drawers. Everything went according to plan except for the drawers. We originally had planned to apply a clear lacquer coat to the drawers. When Ryan did this, unfortunately, the drawers turned three or so shades darker in color. Not the color we were going for so he ended up re-sanding the drawers he stained and keeping them natural. The metal of the handles was also tarnished so I decided to use a metallic copper spray paint to bring them back to life.
We are happy with how the dresser turned out and even happier that we saved hundreds of dollars by repurposing and reworking an existing piece of furniture. Thanks to my parents for letting us take this off their hands and to my grandma for her antique eye. This dresser will always remind me of her! Now it is time to fill up its drawers with tiny clothes, socks, and diapers. This dresser is going to see its share of dirty diapers!
