Ready, set, ride!

I love the season of spring. I know many people prefer fall over spring but you'll find me on Team Spring. The weather is getting warmer rather than colder, the trees are budding and the birds are now chirping. Spring is a sign of life and I love all the feelings that come with it. I'm reminded of running in the wet streets for track practice in high school. And baby calves being born on the farm. The best part, hands down, is knowing that winter is roughly nine months away from rearing its ugly head again. Amen!

In recent years I've found another reason to love spring ... my bonus payout from Veridian deposits into my account every mid-March. In years past, the money has gone to furniture for our living room, basement and my student loans. Last summer I decided I wanted to use my bonus to purchase a bike. I haven't owned a bike since I was probably in junior high, if not earlier. I got the itch from all my time on the trails training for the marathon last summer. I know bikes are expensive but they are also an investment ... something I can own for many years and use frequently.

I decided to forgo the research (which is unlike me) and simply visit Bike Tech in Cedar Falls to work with a knowledgeable staff member. I explained how I wanted to be able to ride my bike for both exercise and leisure. I worked with John who recommended an entry-level road bike. He said riding is a lot like running and people tend to grow in the sport. He thought this version of the road bike was a better fit for me than a sport/trail hybrid. While there, I was able to ride a bike to ensure it was the right size for me and I felt comfortable on it. I ended up buying the one I rode since it was on sale and I loved the color. I'd suggest Bike Tech to any local peeps out there looking to buy a bike.

Remember, as kids, how our parents took photos of us with our new bikes? Well, as an adult, I couldn't resist the temptation to get a couple photos of my new toy! She's a beauty! I think I'll call her Ruby! Can't wait to take her out for a real ride!
