Iowa State Wall Art

Even though fall is quickly approaching and I'm bummed about summer ending, there are still some major perks that come with the season change. One of those is football games and tailgating. We obviously root for Iowa State, no matter how bad they are each year. I thought now would be a perfect time to highlight a little design/decor project we completed shortly after moving into our house. Above our couch, in the basement, we have three custom Iowa State frames. I know many of you have already seen these, however, I thought I'd explain the process involved in case you want to make a set of your own! The initial inspiration came when I was in a shop in Jordon Creek Mall. I noticed they had oversized calendars of vintage Iowa State football promotional posters. I thought the calendar was pretty cool but didn't see a use for it. Then, later after getting home, it clicked ... I could matte and frame these! I ordered the calendar online at this site. The trick in getting the artwork you like best is to search through various years ... since it doesn't matter if the calendar is dated! Once we got the calendar in the mail, Ryan and I selected some of our favorites. Then I played around with which ones went well together. As you can see, we ended up going with two posters with a lot of red in them and one with more tan sandwiched in the middle. Each poster is from a different year, promoting a different game, which is pretty neat. I selected a dark brown frame and an off-white, textured matte.

To help tie things together, about a year ago, I found these unique croquet-like balls from a local antique/decor place. When I saw them, I knew they'd be a perfect addition to the basement. Everything together definitely says Go Cyclones!
